Met Starsailor brak hij door als onderdeel van de multi-platina band, terwijl hij als soloartiest zijn eigen repertoire bleef ontwikkelen. Sinds 2014 heeft hij albums als Turning Point, Tiger on the Bridge, Small Illusions en Coming Good uitgebracht. Na live-uitvoeringen van het nieuwe materiaal en een optreden op Victorious Festival markeerde zijn EP Renewal, uitgebracht in 2024, een nieuw hoofdstuk binnen zijn solowerk. Hier bouwt James verder aan met zijn nieuwste werk, It’s All Happening, die begin dit jaar uit kwam.
